Someone mentioned voter apathy on the Ruislip forum. Here's the reply I posted, which I thought I'd share with people here too: * * * The good news is that if there's one thing sure to shake people out of their apathy it's someone doing something that affects them directly like this. For example: school Parents AGMs are usually attended by about 6 parents out of hundreds....... unless the school is doing something really unpoopular, like trying to sell a piece of its land for flats to be built. Then parents turn up en masse!! If our elected councillors persist with plans to terrorise us in this way, let's not forget it at the next council elections (which are unfortunately some years off, 3 I think.) All over London this is going on, with all 3 parties. Over in Hayes, there are people thinking of running as independents. Now that our CPZ threat has been lifted, the fury is subsiding, but if it were to go ahead, I firmly believe we would get some independents elected in Hayes next time round. This issue is completely non-party political. We all have our preferences, but ultimately, if my favourite party wages war on me, and I don't want to vote for the others (who would do the same anway) the only choice left is an independent who promises to stick up for the people who voted for him/her. I hope the people of Northwood Hills make this plain to their 3 councillors who as far as I can tell aren't anything like as combative with their leadership over this as they ought to be.
